On Sunday, March 8, 2026, the team at the Société francophone de Victoria put on their plaid shirts to transform into true Franco-Canadian lumberjacks and welcome the general public to their Journée des sucres (Sugar Shack Day). This annual event, which has become a must-attend occasion, celebrates the traditions and flavours of Franco-Canadian culture. Eagerly anticipated by the community every year, this event is one of the highlights of Franco Fest, the francophonie festival organized by the SFV during the month of March, International Francophonie Month.
Homemade taffy service at the Société francophone de Victoria
On the program: a maple taffy station, that quintessential treat from Eastern Canada made by boiling maple syrup and pouring it onto snow, then rolling it around a stick to form a candy. Did you know? Quebec produces approximately 90% of Canada’s maple syrup and nearly 70% of the world’s total production. Snow in Victoria is not exactly a common occurrence… so crushed ice was used instead, which took nothing away from the treat’s success — 130 maple taffies were sold!Traditional folk music group Bagatelle performing live
The atmosphere was also in full swing thanks to folk group Bagatelle, a beloved staple of Victoria’s francophone community, who came to entertain the crowd and get participants humming along. Led by Alix Moreau, Victoria’s jigging troupe was also on hand to give a demonstration of this lively traditional dance, adding a festive and traditional touch to a wonderful day. Finally, the Société francophone de Victoria would like to thank all the volunteers who supported us during Sugar Shack Day, whether serving taffy, working the bar, or helping with setup and takedown of the event. This event would not be possible without them. For Sugar Shack Day, the SFV team put on their plaid shirts — just like in Eastern Canada!
